CAMILA GALAZ - APRIL 2020
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Camila, I’m a visual artist working mostly in video, text, and across digital platforms.

Where are you and what are you currently working on?
Right now I’m in Australia. I have a little home studio space I set up for pandemic studio times. A desk, shelves, equipment, a nice window, it’s good. I’m working on finishing a video project I’ve been working on for about a year. I’m working with people in LA, New York, and Chile so the timezone thing is a killer here, but I’m sorta making it work.

What’s your studio routine like? Any zany habits?
I usually start work after lunch, and work solidly for about five hours and that’s enough studio time for me at the moment. In a few weeks I’ll be trying to do some quarantine filming for a project and my routine might shake up a bit. If I’m finding it hard to concentrate I work on things with pomodoro style ‘study with me’ videos on youtube. These are my favorite. Added bonus of not feeling so alone during self-isolation.

What are your favorite materials to work with?
I like pulling descriptions and physical directions from books and movies to play around with. I’ve also been doing a lot of screen recordings and have been working out what role they play in my practice.

How has your work changed over the years?
I originally studied abstract painting before moving into mostly video and digital work a few years ago. I started travelling a lot and my work started to become more transportable. I’ve learnt new skills for this on my own and through some mentorships. I’ve also become more comfortable with making work about myself, or using the appearance of that as misdirection.

Who else do you recommend we look at / read / listen to / cook with?
I was gifted books by some friends before I left New York and they’re both excellent pandemic reads: Fast Casual by Kat Gillespie and the comic ‘Arrowheads’ by Steven Christie. I’ve also recently returned to Christine Shan Shan Hou’s poems in her book Accumulations. All good options for when your brain can’t handle a novel, which I’m finding hard at the moment.
When I’m not playing Animal Crossing, I’ve been watching Austin John Plays playthroughs on youtube. He was posting everyday but is taking a break at the moment for personal reasons. He’s still on twitter and I’m excited to see how he feels about the new Animal Crossing update (art collecting is back!). Also, my favourite standup comedy show Hot Tub is livestreaming on twitch so I’ve been getting my fix from Australia and highly recommend (Tuesday early afternoon in Australia, Monday 8pm for LA time).

Any exciting projects on the horizon?
It's been nice having a bit of extra time to work on some smaller projects I’ve had on the back burner, like a book project I’ve been slowly working on. I also have some online commissions coming up that are in response to current events. Right now there is an influx of opportunities and engagement for artists working in the digital space. It’s exciting but also, why’d it have to be this way baby.
