HOLLY LAY AND HOMERO HIDALGO - NOVEMBER 2020
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
We are optimists that like color. One is a lady from Indiana and one is a fella from Ecuador. We met at UNLV as MFA’s. It was a small program so we all got to know each other well. We both had a dream to start a project space and after graduating we also needed a studio. We got along enough to go in on what we have today at New Orleans Square and we were able to open Available Space Art Projects.

Where are you and what are you currently working on?
We are in Las Vegas and we are working on maintaining ASAP which allows artists to experiment with new work. When it is not taken over by an artist we are working on our own projects. We are collaborating on a piece called “Holy Ghost Wall” where we use religious iconography like nuns, the nativity, and Sunday school craft projects. Homero is always working on a series about time based paintings. Holly is making lots of rugs for an upcoming show for the Windows on 1st in downtown Las Vegas.

What’s your studio routine like? Any zany habits?
Lots of coffee! Homero peels paint off surfaces and Holly winds balls of yarn. When we are at the studio at the same time we listen to a playlist we made/continually add to called “existential rhythms”. This playlist annoys Homero so luckily we have pretty different studio habits. When we do meet up we usually talk politics, art and philosophy and just bounce ideas off one another. We also really get each other’s work.

What are your favorite materials to work with?
Yarn, paint, projections and Photoshop. We are both branching out lately and very excited to work with some new mediums. The material just depends on the idea and how it wants to be executed.

How has your work changed over the years?
It hasn’t changed at all, it is still very unsuccessful. No we really have both evolved a lot. Holly re-discovered yarn in grad school four years ago and hasn't looked back. Now she has so many rugs and so much yarn taking over the studio she doesn't know what to do with it all. Homero has started working on larger scale paintings since grad school. These big paintings also consume our studio. I think we both have a pretty steady studio practice and it is very important to both of us.

Who else do you recommend we look at / read / listen to / cook with?
Homero recommends Based on a True Story by Norm Mcdonald, Mary Shelley and Camille Paglia. Holly has been watching a lot of pre-code movies to escape reality. She has also been reading a biography on Joan Blondell.
